Summary:
Responsible for the oversight
and managing the Infection Prevention and Employee Health functions at UNC
Health Chatham Hospital including policies, practices, procedures, and compliance to maintain an environment of safety for
patients, employees, and others.
Responsibilities:
1. Identification of occupational hazardous and infectious disease risk and processes.
2. Collaborates with management to ensure compliance with established safety, governmental and regulatory agency guidelines, including but not limited to CDC, CMS, HIPAA, OSHA, best practice, and infection prevention and employee health policies and procedures. Participates in practice support rounds to assess for compliance.
3. Conducts surveillance and epidemiological investigations, including disease outbreaks, and documents those activities. Investigates work-related injuries and illnesses in the employee population and provides follow up of employee exposure to disease, blood and body fluids, and hazardous substances.
4. Ensures competency and skills assessment is completed annually for staff performing instrument reprocessing.
5. Ensures staff who require remediation or additional training can achieve compliance. Conduct periodic audits at all locations that perform instrument reprocessing, both High Level Disinfection and Steam and other forms of sterilization.
6. Coordinates and partners with Clinical Education to develop/plan orientation, training, and continuing education by identifying educational needs and developing/planning programs to ensure compliance with consistent infection prevention and clinical process. Participates in development of quality improvement and safety initiatives.
7. Maintains required databases and complies with all regulatory recording and reporting requirements including Workers Compensation, OSHA 300 Log, Sharps Log, Respiratory Protection, and NC Bureau of Labor Statistics.
8. Collaborates with Human Resources, Education, and Managers to onboard new employees, contract workers, students and volunteers. ; conducts infection control risk assessments for construction/renovation projects.
9. Maintains policies, procedures, and protocols in compliance with current professional standards and regulatory guidelines. Completes an annual review of IP and EH policies/ procedures and protocols and updates according to need.
10. Leads the Infection Control/Employee Health Committee and actively participates in other hospital committees and projects.
11. Maintains current knowledge, skills, and certifications through self-development and relevant education. Required to complete the required Infection Prevention training offered by NC SPICE.
12. Demonstrates good customer service skills when interacting with co-workers. Demonstrates leadership in communication and teamwork.
Other information:
Education Requirements:
● Graduation from a state-accredited school of professional nursing and a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) are required.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Registered Nurse with licensure in North Carolina
● Completion of two Infection Prevention courses at NC SPICE (Spring/Fall)
● Certified Occupational Health or Certified Infection Prevention (desirable)
Professional Experience Requirements:
● A minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in a hospital or ambulatory setting is required; experience in Epidemiology/Infection Prevention is preferred.
● Experience with safety and risk management issues to include Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, CDC, Worker's Comp, ADA and FMLA.
● Employee or Occupational health nursing experience desirable.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Language skills: Possesses the ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents, including general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Effectively responds to sensitive inquiries and complaints. Capable of delivering effective and persuasive presentations on controversial or complex topics to leadership, public groups, and boards of directors.
● Mathematical skills: Skilled in working with mathematical concepts, including probability and statistical inference.
● Computer Skills: Skilled in creating reports and spreadsheets, analyzing data, and tracking trends. Proficient with Word, Excel, and the Microsoft Office suite.
● Reasoning Ability: Capable of defining problems, conducting research, gathering data, and interpreting results to establish recommendations and/or policy changes that ultimately guide clinical practice and workflows.
