Description
UNC Health Wayne is excited to offer our Summer Nurse Extern Program for rising senior nursing students. This eight-to-ten-week experience gives students a chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real patient care. Externs will work under the guidance of a dedicated RN preceptor and get hands-on practice while learning how different care teams deliver high-quality care.
The program begins on May 26, 2026.
Summary:
The Nurse extern will safely perform nursing activities specified under direction of assigned preceptor. The experience is designed to provide clinical experiences which will strengthen the knowledge base of the nursing student. The work experience will provide an opportunity to apply classroom learning in clinical settings, to practice newly learned skills and experience varying work schedules.
Responsibilities:
1. Performs unit specific nursing activities within scope of NAI or NAII registry.
2. Practices within limits of the position under direction of assigned preceptor.
3. Shadows the RN preceptor to observe patient care.
4. Identifies learning needs in collaboration with clinical educator and RN preceptor.
5. Demonstrates growth in confidence, while developing and gaining proficiency in utilizing nursing skills.
6. Communicated effectively with patients, families, and hospital team.
7. Maintains effective working relationships with members of health care team.
8. Participates in unit activities such as staff meetings and patient care conferences.
9. Provides input and observations to patient care nurse to support plan of care.
10. Observes progress of patients and reports findings to appropriate preceptor, staff nurses/charge nurse.
11. Attends all classes and learning activities for student nurse extern
Other information:
Education
• High school education or equivalent.
• Must be a rising senior nursing student from an accredited professional school of nursing (Completion of first year in an ADN program and junior classes in a BSN program) with active enrollment in nursing school.
• Prefer overall grade point average of at least 3.0.
Licensure/Certification
• Active listing on North Carolina Department of Health and Human Resources Nurse’s Aide registry as NAI or NAII.
• Basic Life Support.
Experience
• Must be in good standing with the nursing school, having completed the first year of school in an ADN program and junior classes in a BSN program.
• Must have completed at least two clinical nursing rotations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
• Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly
Valid NC Driver’s License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
