Summary:
The Admissions Officer is an integral position for departments and the UNC Medical Center. Its purpose is to optimally facilitate the admissions process for patients while improving their experience through decreased wait time for placement in a bed. The role serves as the key contact for providers when a patient requires admission.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage the admissions list to include prioritization and assignment of appropriate service & nursing unit. Receive admission calls from outpatient providers and the Emergency Department. Document the reason for admission, work up, and treatment plans. Monitors the medicine transfer list to ensure both appropriateness & timeliness of admission.
2. Monitors for potential discharges and helps coordinate a timely discharge.
3. Communicate admissions to the accepting teams. Communicate admissions to Bed Assignment & coordinate admitting times with the House Supervisors. Serve as a point of contact for any stakeholder inquiring about the admission of a patient. Troubleshoots and manages conflict.
4. Takes action to follow up on safety concerns of patients, families, providers or staff.
5. Leads and participates in quality improvement initiatives that focus on identified patient flow and satisfaction deficits.

Education Requirements:
● Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from a state-accredited school of professional nursing.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Three (3) years of professional nursing experience in a tertiary care setting plus one (1) year of experience managing patient flow.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Critical skills and knowledge required for an individual to succeed in this position are condensed in the following areas: Familiarity with the medicine services, hospital flow, and collaboration with other personnel including, but not limited to, the Medicine residents, Bed Assignment staff, & Nursing House Supervisors.
