The Role:

Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director, Perioperative Services provides multidisciplinary leadership and administrative authority for perioperative patient care units and departments on a 24-hour basis.

This role assumes service line accountability for the management, development, and performance of perioperative programs, including operating room services and related departments. The Director is responsible for clinical quality, operational outcomes, and alignment with organizational priorities.

In the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director may assume authority for directing nursing department activities.

This role provides leadership within the professional practice environment and across perioperative services, advocating for patient safety, quality outcomes, and adherence to the ANA Nursing Administration Scope and Standards of Practice.

What You'll Do:

Resource Utilization

  • Blends business competencies and skills with the core ideology of nursing, integrating the nursing process into business decisions. Assumes service line accountability and responsibility for the management and development of business plans and programs within the service line and for the operations and results in each designated patient care unit or department.
  • Optimizes fiscal resource allocation to support current and potential objectives and initiatives.
  • Leads in promoting the appropriate use of innovative applications and new technologies, including consideration of the impact on global environmental health and sustainability.
  • Promotes activities that assist others, as appropriate, in becoming informed about costs, risks and benefits of plans and solutions.

Leadership

  • Promotes and maintains a positive, professional image of nursing and clinical services. Recognizes managers and staff contributions consistently and facilitates educational and developmental opportunities for managers and staff.
  • Provides leadership, direction, and mentoring to managers that encourages goals achievement and professional growth. Assists nursing management in establishing a collaborative practice model throughout nursing.
  • Supports and fosters strong nursing morale on units by creating an environment which cultivates personal investment and excellence; nurtures commitment to a common vision and shared values; provides managers and staff with opportunities and latitude to grow and achieve; builds effective teams committed to organizational goals, promotes collaboration, and encourages, as well as, empowers others to achieve.
  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting by creating and maintaining a healthy work environment, engaging as a team builder and serving as a change agent.
  • Accurately assesses the strengths and developmental needs of managers and provides timely, constructive feedback that contributes to others’ development. Role models and mentors a positive image of nursing regarding the values/professional/ethical/legal framework in nursing.
  • Contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues.
  • Encourages the recruitment and retention of quality patient care staff. Incorporates “Code of Ethics for Nurses” in nursing units.
  • Ensures that annual performance evaluations are completed on time.
  • Promotes advancement of the profession through participation in professional organizations.

Financial Management and Resource Utilization

  • Develops, monitors, and analyzes labor, operating, and capital expense budgets in assigned areas and assures appropriateness of human and material resource allocations. Ensures that economic performance of service line reflects budget plan.
  • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing and other services.

Communication

  • Applies broad knowledge and seasoned experience when addressing complex issues; defines strategic issues clearly despite ambiguity; takes all critical information into account when making decisions in the context of the mission, vision, and values of Mission Hospital.
  • Promotes a free flow of information and communication throughout the organization (upward, downward, and across); listens actively; encourages open expression of ideas and opinions. Communicates needs, issues, and concerns appropriately, utilizing the chain-of-command.
  • Delivers clear, convincing, and well-organized presentations; projects credibility and poise even in highly visible, adversarial situations.
  • Facilitates the exchange of information inter and intra departmentally and integrates department services with hospital’s primary function.

Collaboration

  • Collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of patient care services.
  • Facilitates in development and management of the care delivery process for designated nursing units or departments ensuring that policies, procedures, standards of care, and standards of practice are consistent across the organization and with current nursing and clinical research and practice.
  • Incorporates the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and patient advocacy.
  • Collaborates with all levels of staff, interdisciplinary teams, executive leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with appropriate medical staff/medical directors to establish service line goals which are consistent with the hospital’s mission and goals. Partners with physicians to ensure patient needs are identified and met; establishes effective working relationships with all key physicians; assists nursing management in establishing a collaborative practice model throughout nursing.

Quality and Performance Improvement

  • Identifies and evaluates opportunities for performance improvement within the service line, and implements quality initiatives that measurably improve quality of care and performance.
  • Collects and analyzes comprehensive data. Identifies expected outcomes. Develops implements and evaluates a plan to attain expected outcomes.
  • Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, nursing services administration, and the delivery of services.
  • Uses creativity and innovation in nursing practice to improve care delivery and population outcomes.
  • Uses the results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and in the healthcare delivery system.
  • Assures the development and implementation of an effective, ongoing program to measure assess and improve the quality of care, treatment, and services delivered.
  • Evaluates the practice environment and quality of nursing care rendered in relation to existing evidence, identifying opportunities for the generation and use of research.
  • Networks and collaborates across the health care industry in order to continually promote best practices in patient care delivery. Ensures patient care services are in compliance with JCAHO, Title 22, and other related regulatory agencies.
  • Ensures annual skill validation and proficiency of the clinical staff is completed.

Customer Satisfaction

  • Develops strategies to achieve the hospital goal for customer satisfaction in each patient care unit.

  • Demonstrate competencies in line with the four-(4) core values that are the foundation of all activities performed by management employees in order to achieve the mission of the St. Joseph Health System.
  • Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice.

Systems Accountability

  • Responsible for certifying both systems and applications access within the SJHS environment every 90 days for all direct reports.

What You’ll Bring:

Education & Credentials

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Master’s Degree in relevant field of management, policy, or administration
  • Required upon hire: California Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed)

Experience & Expertise

  • 10 or more years of nursing experience, with 3 years in nursing administration

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.
