Registered Nurse (RN) - Operating Room (OR) Specialty Coordinator - Southside Regional Medical Center

 

Primary Function/General Purpose of Position  

The OR Registered Nurse Specialty Coordinator provides direct and indirect patient care in surgical specialties utilizing the nursing process and current clinical knowledge to provide professional nursing care for all patients in the surgical unit in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization. The OR Registered Nurse Specialty Coordinator utilizes advanced knowledge and experience to assess the health needs of patients, collaborate with health team members to coordinate patient care, anticipates the outcomes of nursing interventions, and sets criteria for the quality of patient care.   

 

Essential Job Functions  

  • Performs all essential job functions of the RN Surgical Services including but not limited to providing pre-op, intra-op and post-op care to surgical patients, administering medications, patient assessment and care planning, patient safety advocate, point of contact for patient care coordination, may delegate tasks as appropriate, manages patient care in the OR and coordinates needs of the team with care providers, keeps accurate records, operated equipment, and anticipated the needs of the surgical team.   

  • Able to perform in the scrub nurse role as necessary. Provides and anticipates the needs and requests of the surgeon. Ensures that appropriate instrumentation and supplies are readily available in the room or on the sterile field.    

  •  Assists the Director Perioperative Services or designee in the preparation of the fiscal budget, long range planning, and major equipment budgeting for the operation rooms.  Participates in financial accountability by utilizing resources in a cost-conscious manner and offers cost reduction initiatives. Analyzes the department’s needs, including vendor relations, and informs the Manager through the budgeting process. 

  • Supports surgical service’s efforts to exceed patient satisfaction rates for the individual facility, consistently using scripted language that promotes excellent patient satisfaction responsesSupports efforts to exceed targets for employee engagement, recruitment, and retention for the individual facility. 

  • Assists the Director Perioperative Services or designee with continued communications with physicians, sales representatives, public, and other departments. Coordinates with surgeons, vendors and hospital leadership to source and procure supplies, instruments and equipment as requested by surgeons for patient care for their service line.   Orders items as necessary. 

  • Maintains and updates preference list of physicians and procedures for their service lineReviews individual, unit and specialty data for all dimensions of performance and applies this data to continually improve patient care activities.   

  • Participates in, and helps plan, education and development and implementation of unit and departmental education.

  • Advises, precepts, and teaches staffServes as intra-facility resource for unit in-service educational needs.  

  • Advocates on behalf of patient/family to connect them with appropriate resources to meet identified needs and address concerns.  

  • Achieves outcomes that consistently meet or exceed generally accepted clinical standards for the discipline

  • Leads and participates in relevant quality improvement initiatives.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of current literature (research) in area of practice and participates in unit-based research activities as appropriate.

  • Offers performance improvement initiatives

  • Demonstrates ability to manage the Daily Surgery Schedule as required

  • Responsible for daily assignments of specialty team members

  • Coordinates care delivery to achieve optimal patient outcomes and physician satisfaction

Licensing/Certification 

  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required) 
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice (required)   
  • ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred) 
  • PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association (preferred) 
  • CNOR Certified Perioperative Nurse (preferred) 
  • SGNA Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (preferred) 

 

Education 

  • Graduate of an accredited school or college of nursing (required)     
  • 2 year/ Associate Nursing Degree (required) 
  • BSN Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred) 

 

Work Experience 

  • 2 years’ experience in perioperative nursing, including post-surgical care (based on market design) (required)
