Emergency Room Technician II positions are available at the UNC Medical Center Emergency Room Department. UNC Hospitals Emergency Department (ED) is a designated Level I Trauma Center, serving as North Carolina’s primary referral hospital while also providing care to the Chapel Hill and Orange County community.

The Emergency Room Department is a designated Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center serving as North Carolina's primary referral hospital as well as serving communities in Orange County. The staff collaboratively operate as a unified team across two distinct units - Main ED (adults) and Pediatric ED (children)- providing care for patients of all ages from neonates to geriatrics. The UNC Medical Center has a separate, dedicated Psych Emergency Department which works closely with our larger Emergency Department.
This is a 36-hour-per-week position that qualifies for a comprehensive benefits package. Paid time off (PTO) is accrued based on hours worked. The role also requires attendance at a week-long hospital orientation, which is offered every two weeks.
Orientation Schedule: Monday and Tuesday - In person from 8am to 5pm; Wednesday - 8am to 10am Virtual and in person from 1pm to 5 pm; and Thursday and Friday - Virtual.
Summary:
Perform a variety of routine and advanced
patient care tasks under the direction of nursing staff to assist medical and
nursing personnel in the examination, treatment and care of patients; performs
a variety of clerical and technical tasks as assigned
Responsibilities:
Participate in patient care interventions and personal care procedures for patients, under the direction of nursing staff such as hygiene, bowel and bladder elimination, and ambulation. Assist with approved dressing and wound care appropriate for CNA II level training. Provide assistance with nutritional activities. Perform a variety of EKG technician tasks as required which include routine, repeat or STAT EKGs. Perform adult, isolated venipuncture for collection of routine blood specimens and blood cultures. Maintains ongoing, high-level surveillance of patients’ cardiac rhythms and notifies nursing/clinicians of any rate/rhythm changes and/or inadequate signal reception according to clinician/provider orders in a timely manner. Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patient specimens.
Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required. Escort and transport patients that do not require any hemodynamic monitoring. Answers signal lights, bells, or intercom system to determine patients’ needs, and promptly respond.
Maintains a clean work area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required. Maintain clean tags on all clean equipment in the clean utility room.
Function as patient sitter for risk-identified patients.

Education Requirements:
● High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
● Licensed as a Nursing Assistant II by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service
● Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Prefer experience performing EKGs
