UNC gastroenterologists have written many of the national guidelines for diagnosing and treating digestive and liver diseases. Each year we staff more than 25,000 clinic visits and perform more than 20,000 GI endoscopic procedures and 3,500 motility procedures. They provide care to adults of all ages within the surrounding community. This unit cares for a range of medical and surgical patients with critical care needs. The majority of patients are intermediate status, with complications such as Heart Failure, substance withdrawal, sepsis, mechanical ventilation, and respiratory disorders. About one-quarter of the unit volume are ICU level patients requiring vasoactive drips and mechanical ventilation.
