Description
The Registered Nurse delivers health care to students in a school-based adolescent health care program and fulfills such duties as assessment, planning, teaching, and counseling. The Registered Nurse functions as a health team member in meeting objectives of the school-based clinic under the supervision of the Program Manager and Nurse Practitioner.
The purpose of the WISH program is to render school-based care that provides affordable, accessible physical and mental health services to adolescents. WISH advocates for the health rights of all children and addresses a broad range of needs. The program goal is to help Wayne County students succeed in school by promoting healthy lifestyles by providing comprehensive health care services to meet the needs of all students.Responsibilities:
1. Supports the WISH school health care team and its patients by providing and documenting nursing care following established standards and practices.
2. Provides patient care and education. Assists in locating and coordinating services from other providers and resources.
3. Provides emergency care following established standards and practices for ill and injured students and refers them to appropriate sources for further medical care.
4. Documents all patient interactions and other clinical activities accurately and in a timely manner in the electronic health record (EHR).
5. Demonstrates respect for patients, teammates and school staff by presenting a friendly, courteous manner at all times.
6. Develops effective working relationships with school administration and staff.
7. Provides attention to patients in a manner that builds confidence, trust and loyalty.
8. Acts as a member of the care team, including preparing patients to be seen by collecting and recording (as applicable): vital signs, current medications, history and chief complaint.
9. Triages patients according to approved protocols. Answers and documents patient phone calls; takes complete messages and routes to providers as needed.
10. Provides and documents patient care such as giving injections and performing preventive screenings following WISH policies and procedures and standing orders.
11. Educates patients regarding their illness or injury and provide instruction regarding self-management of their condition.
12. Schedules tests, treatments and follow up visits on behalf of patients. Assists patients with identifying suitable outside resources for disease management and other services; refer patients when appropriate.
13. As appropriate, conducts outreach to patients and families in need of appointments or other services, to communicate test results and other information, and to follow up after appointments to be sure patients are following their plan of care.
14. Monitors task list in order to respond to tasks in a timely manner, follows up on overdue orders and monitors status of critical referrals.
15. Tracks data for Quality Improvement reports and for Program Manager as needed.
16. Plays an active role in meeting the performance measures for the clinics for enrollments, physicals and immunizations as set by the Program Manager.
17. Orders supplies and vaccines and maintains appropriate records. Prepares and maintains equipment including sterilization.
18. Assists with the orientation of new teammates.
19. Maintains knowledge of current coding, regulations and WISH/ UNC Health Wayne and applicable Wayne County Public School Board policies
20. Assists care team to assure smooth office operation and delivery of excellent service through teamwork.
21. Keeps Manager, Nurse Practitioner and School Administration informed of issues, concerns or trends appropriately and promptly.

Education Requirements:
● Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. BLS certification required.Professional Experience Requirements:
● At least 2-3 years' experience required. Work with adolescents in a pediatric unit, office, or health clinic preferred.Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Knowledge of adolescent nursing, child and human development, common childhood infectious diseases and chronic and acute health conditions.
● Knowledge of community resources that support children and families.● Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural and socio-economic differences.● Knowledge of special needs children, special education, and students with disabilities.●Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with adolescents, teens and their families.● Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Proficient with MS Office and EMR, with the ability to learn new software rapidly.● Ability to stand, walk and meet the physical requirements of the position.
Valid NC Driver’s License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
