JOB SUMMARY - Patient Observer I/II: Department: House Supervisors Reports To: Nurse Manager II Under the direction of the Nurse Manager II and Primary Department Director/Manager and/or Float Department Charge Nurse, provides constant observation to assigned patient(s) who is confused/disoriented and shows lack of safety awareness causing imminent risk of self-harm. Promotes and protects patient safety and communicates with patients, families, and clinical staff. Observes and reports changes in patient behavior to the nurse. Speaks and understands the English language sufficient enough to communicate with nursing staff and other staff that interact with the patient. Reads and writes English sufficient to complete the required observer documentation. The distinguishing characteristic of the Patient Observer I and Patient Observer II is the Patient Observer II has successfully completed TEAM/BERT, BLS and other required BRH training and therefore is able to provide observation for more difficult/challenging patients. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into this classification) Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Preferred Experience: One (1) year experience working with clients, patients, or customers in a social service setting OR a combination of relevant experience & post-secondary education. Effective verbal and/or written communications skills. Excellent communications and organization skills. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and/or physiology preferred. Certification(s): Patient Observer I: Current Basic Life Support certification within 3 months of hire; must complete BERT/TEAM training within 3 months of hire. Patient Observer II: Current Basic Life Support certification; Successful completion of BERT/TEAM training; Successful completion of BRH required online training & patient orientation competencies. About Bartlett Regional Hospital Bartlett Regional Hospital is the largest hospital in Southeast Alaska, providing comprehensive health care services, with 57 acute care beds, 16 alcohol recovery beds and 74 physicians on active staff.
