We are a medical unit with a focus on the gastrointestinal system. Many of our patients present through the emergency department with a variety of interesting and complicated diagnosis. The nurses on GI Medicine get very familiar working alongside patients with non-specified abdominal pain, acute pancreatitis, crohns disease and GI Bleeds. The nursing team goes through specific competency to administer transfusions independently in order to ensure timely treatment for the patients we serve. General surgery cases can include such procedures as appendectomies, cholecystectomies, thyroidectomies and small bowel resections. Our colorectal surgery population consists of patients with long standing histories of Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s and diverticulitis or new diagnosis of colon cancer who now require surgical intervention. With this population, the nursing team works closely with our Wound and Ostomy team to give these patients the emotional and physical support they need to recover.
