Job Description


The Supervisor of Capacity and Patient Flow acts as a primary liaison between Nursing, Central Bed Placement and various departments throughout Forsyth Medical Center (FMC) and the Novant Health Greater Winston-Salem Market (GWSM) facilities. Ensures the prompt and accurate assignment of patients into a bed/unit, and facilitates the resolution of any issues that affect efficient patient throughput within the system. The Supervisor collaborates with leaders, providers, clinical departments, and ancillary operations to determine optimal placement of patients, using clinical nursing judgement to evaluate and match the clinical needs of patients with the availability of organizational capacity and available services. The Supervisor assists with oversight of the Discharge Unit and team members assigned there. With the Manager of Capacity and Patient Flow, Supervisor acts to resolve operational issues, and make recommendations to improve access to the facility, and to strategize the most efficient use of capacity and available beds. In conjunction with the Manager of Capacity and Patient Flow, the Supervisor will assist in the development of systems, procedures, and policies to maximize effective communication and expeditious placement of patients entering the Novant Health system. Maintains own knowledge of current trends, developments, and industry standards within the realm of Patient Throughput and Logistics. The Supervisor, in conjunction with the Manager of Capacity and Patient Flow, provides clinical and administrative leadership at the department level.

  • Education: 2 Year / Associate Degree Required. ADN required. 4 Year / Bachelors Degree Preferred. BSN preferred.
  • Experience: 2 Years Nursing Care required. 1 Year Prior demonstrated leadership preferred. 2 Years Epic System experience preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: RN Required.
  • Additional Skills Required: Successful completion of department-specific skills validation and competency testing. Ability to successfully complete Leader Education and training. Strong communication, team building, and organization skills. Strong problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills with ability to conceptualize solutions to challenging situations.
  • Additional Skills preferred: Prior experience with patient throughput and/or logistics, reflecting general knowledge in hospital/pre-hospital medical principles and practice skills, current trends, and industry standards. Prior experience in emergency department, trauma or critical care units.
