The University of Kansas Health System supports staff in obtaining chemotherapy certification through the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and provides a safe space through simulation to practice administrating chemotherapy. We recognize the importance of providing excellent cancer care, so professional certification is encouraged. There is an incentive to become and continue to be professionally certified.

We currently are expanding into three new units due to our increasing growth and will open these in Winter 2021. This new space will allow staff to provide individualized care to patients and their caregivers and offer state-of-the-art amenities for patients, including a family kitchen, laundry facilities, a meditation room, and patient gyms.

Cambridge 8: Hematologic Malignancies Unit

This 16-bed protective environment unit specializes in the care of patients with hematologic malignancies, including diseases such as lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myelomas. These patients require complex chemotherapy regimens, enhanced monitoring for trial treatment side effects, and supportive care therapies including intravenous medications, electrolyte replacements and blood transfusions. Patients are admitted on this unit for several days of each chemotherapy cycle or for complications with their disease, which allows staff to develop strong relationships over the course of their treatment. The unit shares the level with the cancer intensive care unit, which allows a close working relationship with ICU partners. The primary service is an attending-led teaching service with consistent attending providers, who work to create a collaborative space for nurses and providers. The nursing team is a close small team that strongly values teamwork and providing exceptional care for this patient population.
