Job Details:

Reporting to the hospital nurse executive, the Director of Surgical Services will direct the daily operations of the surgical services department and manage a team of 20 FTEs. The director will ensure collaborative and positive relationships with physicians, other leaders and staff. The director will develop and implement strategic goals for the department while ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies. The director will focus on an original approach to increase customer/patient satisfaction and employee engagement.

Position-Specific Competencies:

  • Maintain continuing quality performance and performance improvement analysis and evaluations of patient care delivery.
  • Assure that clinical service objectives are established, and outcomes demonstrated.
  • Plan and direct the development, administration and evaluation of the clinical service budget (operating and capital) for areas of responsibility and maintain accountability for sound fiscal management.
  • Plans and implements/markets/evaluates new services
  • Coaches, counsels and appraises employees regarding performance and/or disciplinary matters according to policy.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing with a current North Carolina RN license or RN multi-state licensure privilege through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or healthcare administration preferred.
  • Minimum of five years nursing experience is required with at least two years in OR.
  • Must have at least three (3) years supervision or management experience.

  • Must have leadership and project development skills as well as knowledge of healthcare trends/issues.
  • Must be able to comprehend complex detailed information.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model, be flexible/open to change, function effectively under pressure.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must maintain clinical and professional competency levels appropriate to the services provided and to the needs of different age groups served.
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of age groups, ethnic, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Displays effective organizational skills, with ability to prioritize with accuracy and speed.
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities and stressful situations.
