Role Purpose

This position is responsible for the daily operations of patient placement including oversight of process improvements and throughput. This position will make recommendations and implement policies ensuring they are in accordance with the hospital policies and goals and support efficient medically appropriate throughput. Manages and coordinates the allocation of beds in collaboration with patient access and all other departments and portals. Directs the allocation of bed management activities within patient care areas including but not limited to patient access, transporters, all clinical areas and acts as a liaison in working with relevant departments.


  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Accountable for departmental and hospital planning of improvements to throughput as related to bed placement and transfers to and from other facilities and within the hospital. Responsible for a working knowledge of regulations and policies regarding patient care, bed placement, transfers, and EMTALA. Uses critical thinking skills in prioritizing patient movement in, out, and within the hospital working closely with all patient care units including but not limited to nursing.
  • Collaborates with physicians, patient care leaders and staff, and other departments to enhance patient flow and in other ways improve throughput and flow processes and bed management. Uses data and observation to focus on intervention for patient centered and medically appropriate change.
  • Manages operations within the department and integrates services which enhance throughput for the organization. Promotes safety by communicating relevant information to the team and relevant departments within the organization and in other ways reduces risk.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 2-5 years of experience
  • 2-5 years of supervisory experience

  • Registered Nurse (RN) License
