Job Description

We are looking for a Staff Registered Nurse for Emergency Department at St. Mary Medical Center.

Location: Apple Valley, CA

Work Schedule: Full Time - 72 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 12-hour, Nights

Job Summary:

Within the identified roles of Practitioner, Teacher and Leader, the staff Registered Nurse provides collaborative and comprehensive care based on patient and/or family needs. The staff Registered Nurse implements and evaluates care delivery based on predicted outcomes while anticipating potential responses provides assessment, treatment and care throughout the hospital and outlying clinics. The staff Registered Nurse will practice in accordance with all regulatory, professional, legal and hospital policies. The Staff Registered Nurse works independently under limited supervision directly reporting to the Unit/Department Supervisor, Director of Assistant Vice President.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs a complete patient assessment that encompasses the patient’s physical, physiological, emotional and spiritual status.
  • Formulates a nursing diagnosis based upon the patient assessment and develops and implements an individualized patient care plan that is based upon collaboration with the patient and the assessment of the patient.
  • Performs procedures/treatments, administers medications and provides nursing care based upon established clinical practice (policy and procedures), the patients plan of care and physician orders.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the care plan through observation of the patient’s physical condition and behavior, signs and symptoms of illness and reactions to the treatment. Through communication with the patient and the health team members, including shift to shift report modifies the plan as needed.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements the individual patient/family education plan together with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Provides and documents patient/family education within the Registered Nurse’s scope of practice. Communicates effectively with members of the health care team with regard to patients condition and needs.
  • Acts as the patient/family advocate as circumstances require by initiating action to improve health care or to change decision or activities which are against the interest or wishes of the patient or family and by giving the patient/family the opportunity to make informed decisions about health care before it is provided.
  • Coordinates discharge planning of the simple patient and obtain necessary orders for discharge.
  • Delegates tasks to Team Members based on scope of practice, competencies and qualifications.
  • Effectively supervises care being given by Nurses Aides, Licensed Vocational Nurses and Student Nurses.
  • Participates in orientation of new employees and student nurses.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking capabilities.
  • Participates in continuing education programs offered by SMMC. Assists and participates in committee work as requested. Is an effective member of the healthcare team and participates in 75% of department and unit staff meetings.
  • Knows staff nurse is a team member in the Utilization Management process.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary conferences.
  • Documents patient specific data/information concisely and thoroughly, according to hospital and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Completed all CEU requirements in accordance with RN license renewal.
  • Emergency, 701000-K01:
  • Completes required orientation package within six months of hire.
  • Accurately interprets dysrhythmias on EKG strips, and initiates appropriate interventions, Acts as a resource for peers in the interpretation of EKG dysrhythmias.
  • Assists physicians with special tests and procedures (chest tube insertion, CV Pline insertion, lumbar puncture central lines; moderate sedation).
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform CPR appropriately utilizing the Emergency Nursing Guidelines for Adult and Pediatric Patients.
  • Completes all required competencies and certifications in a timely manner (e.g. annual defibrillation, ACLS).
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform defibrillation/cardioversion utilizing standard paddles and/or pacer/defib pads as required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to care for and recognize potential life threatening disease process in all patients.
  • Consistently completes or assists in the completion of all documentation records required of codes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of all crash carts, including the pacemaker cart, and appropriate ambu equipment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage patients potentially requiring mechanical ventilation, accurately interpreting ABG and lab values, maintain open airway with suctioning and positioning, assess pulse oximetry, assess patient lung status, and assist physician with intubation.
  • Demonstrates the ability to act as a leader and directs others in emergency situation.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to manage the acute MI/R/O MI patient.
  • Demonstrates the ability to care for a patient receiving thrombolytic therapy.
  • Demonstrates sound critical care knowledge base in clinical practice and decision making accurately assessing, interpreting and intervening as indicated by the patient’s clinical condition.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to manage the potentially acute trauma patient.
  • Demonstrates knowledge to recognize OB emergencies and intervene appropriately.
  • Transports patients according to established criteria in a timely manner and maintains awareness of unit activity.
  • Ensures that all patients receive appropriate discharge instructions and referrals as instructed by the physician.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of alleged child abuse, child and adult sexual assault protocol and accurate completion of all appropriate forms. Intervenes and makes appropriate referrals for victim witness, social service and police departments.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to care for all ages of patients (pediatric to geriatric) and approach their clinical responsibility from a developmental perspective.
  • Possesses knowledge of growth and development and the ability to observe/report data reflective of the pediatric patient’s status, i.e., developmental age, head circumference, weight, length/height.
  • Possesses the ability to observe/report appropriate information needed to identify the needs of the pediatric patient and provide care to the pediatric patient.
  • Encourages the parent through education/teaching to become an integral part of the daily activities including continuous care and treatment of the pediatric patient.
  • Possesses the ability to understand the unique needs of the pediatric patient and have the ability to interpret the nonverbal communication of the patient.
  • Obtains the skills and knowledge needed to provide care to the pediatric patient through education, training,, or experience.
  • Possesses knowledge of growth and development and the ability to observe/report data reflective of the adolescent’s status.
  • Possesses the ability to observe/report the appropriate information needed to identify the unique needs of the adolescent and provide care to the adolescent patient.
  • Encourages the adolescent through education/teaching to become an integral part of the daily activities, including assessment, treatment, and continuous care and treatment of the adolescent patient.
  • Obtains the skills and knowledge needed to provide care to the adolescent through education, training, or experience.
  • Possesses knowledge of the effects of the aging process (changes in visual acuity, hearing, gait, balance, mental status, verbal communications, and nutrition) and ability to assess data reflective of the geriatric patient’s status.
  • Possesses the ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify the needs of the geriatric patient and to provide care to the patient.
  • Possesses the ability to understand the unique needs of the geriatric patient (measures to prevent physical injury; encourage family/significant other involvement; provide for time for decision making, verbal/non verbal expression activities requiring movement, eating, etc. participation in self care activities).
  • Obtains the skills and knowledge needed to provide care to the geriatric patient through education, training or experience.

Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of nursing procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic nursing and unit specific equipment.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education:

  • Associate's Degree Or equivalent educ/experience
  • Coursework/Training - Other training as specific to unit requirements.
  • Coursework/Training - Environmental Orientation within 30 days of hire.
  • Coursework/Training - General RN competency within 30 days of hire.
  • Coursework/Training - Unit Specific competency within 90 days of hire.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current California Registered Nurse License by evidence of Primary Source Verification.
  • Current BLS.
  • ACLS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • PALS, Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience: Two (2) years experience in a hospital environment.
