Job Description


Assumes responsibility for the nurse care of patients treated in the Surgical Services Department. Provides direct and indirect patient care. Provides surgical pre-admission workups, along with admitting and discharging patients. Provides nursing care for moderate sedation patients including but not limited to pre/post Lithotripsy and Regional Block patient care. Assists in patient education. Performs the primary function of a registered nurse in assessing, planning, intervention, implementing, and evaluating the care of all assigned patients during an assigned shift. Is responsible for meeting the established Standards of Nursing Practice. Maintains professional and unit specific standards of care.

Operates as a key member of the health care team using the nursing process, clinical skills and leadership to direct, provide and evaluate age specific patient care according to the department's scope of service.

Education and Formal Training: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and current and valid license to practice nursing in North Carolina. Will have current CPR certification or obtain within 30 days of hire date. Current certification in ACLS and PALS obtain within six months and maintained.

Work Experience: Preoperative Nursing Experience Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with ill people; uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and a professional attitude when relating with patients, families, and co-workers at all times. Actively functions as a patient advocate. Must have thorough knowledge of all necessary patient assessment techniques, treatment techniques and the operation and maintenance of all unit specific equipment, including IV pumps, computer terminals, printers and fax machines. Knowledge of current hospital emergency policies and procedures, including CPR is required along with knowledge of fire, safety, disaster, and infection control policies. Excellent communication and administrative skills are necessary. Demonstrates an ability to respond to changing workloads and performs in an accurate and precise manner in crisis and emergency situations when time is critical. Uses support staff in an efficient and cost conscious manner. Must be a patient advocate and be willing to provide exceptional care to patient every time no exceptions. Must have a positive and professional attitude and be a team player.
