The University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City offers nationally recognized psychiatry and behavioral sciences services. As the only academic medical center in Kansas, the health system offers care for children, adolescents and adults. We are committed to high-quality, effective patient care through a team of board-certified psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, experienced psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists and other professionals.
Strawberry Hill - Adult Psychiatry
The need for inpatient adult mental and behavioral healthcare services is growing locally and across the country. The Strawberry Hill location will help The University of Kansas Health System meet the urgent need for short-term, comprehensive care for conditions such as major depression, anxiety disorder and post-partum depression. Once renovations are complete, all inpatient adult mental and behavioral health beds currently on the main campus and at the Prairie Ridge Campus will move to the new facility. The facility will open with 47 beds, providing the space needed to care for hundreds of additional patients every year.
Our adult mental health nurses (AMHNs) are registered nurses who focus on supporting the optimal development of patients as well as the coordination and delivery of mental healthcare with each patient's family. As one of the largest group of healthcare providers who meet with adults, our nurses are vital to mental health promotion and early intervention. Our mental health nurses bring a particular orientation to their work, the value of the relationship, a focus on health, and a view of the patient in relation to social systems such as work, school, and community (American Nurses Association, 1985). These nurses provide our patients with direct patient care, interacting with all staff daily and helping to oversee the safety of the units. They provide ongoing medical and psychosocial assessments during a patient's stay, administering medications, taking vitals, connecting to daily support groups, patient education and review of safety protocols. Our nursing staff uses a holistic approach to patient care and wellness, and they serve as patient advocates throughout each patient's stay, using an approach of healing the mind, soul, spirit and body.
