Providence is calling a Registered Nurse (RN) Staff (Extended Care Facility, Variable Shift, 0.0 FTE) to Providence Kodiak Medical Center in Kodiak, Alaska. Demonstrate commitment to teamwork and interacts harmoniously with others. Provide clinical support to other nursing departments, as needed
- LEADERSHIP: May act in a leadership role, responsible for the daily operations of the Unit in the absence of the manager; providing direction, supervision and coaching/precepting to department staff. Identify concerns and take appropriate action(s) to involve colleagues and management in the development and promotion of a safe patient care environment. Actively engage in positive communication, feedback, and the on-going development of self and team. Take an active role in building and maintaining an environment that fosters open communication, patient and family-centered care and healthy collegial relationships. Demonstrate adaptive/timely communication based on individual patient/family needs
- ASSESSMENT AND PLANNING: Possess knowledge of developmental needs and competent in the assessment and treatment as it relates to the age of the patient population served. Conduct and document a comprehensive patient assessment upon admission. Continually reassess and apply appropriate advocacy and interventions as indicated. Competent in the interpretation of a patient’s self-assessment and behavior. This information must be interpreted with an understanding of the cognitive, physical emotional, psychosocial and chronological maturation process. Actively involve patient and family in the collaborative plan of care
- IMPLEMENTATION AND REEVALUATION: Monitor patient’s condition, note changes in status, utilize judgment and take appropriate action. Communicate patient status to colleagues and physicians to include: situation, background, assessment, and recommendations (S.B.A.R). Utilize tools adopted through quality and safety initiatives when communicating patient status change and at the time of patient handoff. Use the Rapid Recognition and Response protocol when indicated by changes in patient’s conditions or concerns Promote and routinely offers comfort and pain management measures. Documentation reflects assessment, treatment and re-assessment as required to meet patient goals
- COLLABORATION: Work in partnership with the patient, family and members of the healthcare team; develops, documents, implements and monitors an individualized plan of care which reflects a standard of care based on evidence and best practice. Provide, document, and consult to assure necessary patient and family education in support of the treatment plan. Adaptive to change and updated patient care practices within an evolving healthcare environment. Work together with team members, the patient, the patient’s family and others as appropriate in the development of a proactive discharge plan
- DOCUMENTATION: Legibly and electronically documents patient care activities and information in an accurate, concise, and timely manner. Competent in the input and retrieval of information within the various forms of written and electronic documentation
- SAFETY: Provide safe quality care in an efficient, cost effective manner. Consistently demonstrate and promote safe patient care and infection control practices: (i.e. Hand washing/Patient ID, Communication, Reduction of infection Risks, Medication Safety & Reconciliation, Falls Prevention, No Preventable Deaths/Injuries, Inclusion of patients/families concerns and access to healthcare team). Perform procedures and treatments according to accepted unit guidelines, National Patient Safety Goals, Emergency Response procedures, and the Nurse Practice Act. Comply with hospital standards to assure continued compliance and regulatory requirements are met. Examples include but are not limited to: The Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, State, and Federal requirements. Ensure facility and department policies are followed
- PARTICIPATION: Actively contribute to unit stability and function. Attend and participate in a minimum of 80% of scheduled staff meetings. If unable to attend in person, ensure reading the minutes and signing them off, and is responsible for meeting content regardless of attendance. Actively participate in departmental and unit-based education and competencies. Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives by providing on-going monitoring and data collection and submit reports as indicated. Participate in departmental activities that improve patient care and process systems. Actively assist others in transitioning and applying knowledge to the clinical and operational setting
- Demonstrate advancement of professional nursing practice through continuing education, required training, certification, and participation in department and unit activities. Assure all competencies, certifications, safety information and courses are completed as required
- Promote and role models collaborative practice and relationships with other health care professionals. Recognize the role that the cultural diversity of patients and their families, employees, medical staff, volunteers and community members plays in achieving productive and positive relationships Round with physicians and other team members to promote continuity of care and patient’s confidence in their care delivery team
- Safeguard all forms (Electronic, written and oral) of confidential information as it relates to patients, their families, medical staff and employees. Is aware of and compliant with organizational polices regarding HIPPA, Fraud and Abuse, Conflict of Interest and the Code of Conduct
- Complete initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department
- Competencies may include mandatory unit required competencies, and BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, as designated
Required qualifications for this position include:
- Graduate of an accredited/approved school of Nursing
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card must be from American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- 1 year Registered Nurse experience in an acute care hospital

Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center (PKIMC) provides comprehensive health care to residents and visitors of Kodiak Island. This critical access hospital features 25 acute care beds, including four birthing suites, one OB triage room, and two ICU beds. In addition, the Elder House, PKIMC’s long term care facility, has 22 beds.
PKIMC provides an extensive array of inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency department, surgery, laboratory services, maternity, general medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, sleep studies, specialty clinics, diagnostic imaging services and pharmacy and is staffed by a mix of primary care physicians, surgeons and specialists who provide family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics, radiology and general practice.
