The Emergency Department (ED) at Virginia Mason Memorial averages 245 daily visits making it one of the busiest in Washington State. We see this volume of patients in a department with 24 beds in the main ED and 9 beds in our ED Annex. What we lack in space is more than made up for in the can-do spirit that prevails. Memorial's ED is a Level 3 Trauma Center for adults, pediatrics, and OB, a Level 1 for cardiac care, and a Level 2 for stroke. RNs in Memorial's ED enjoy the full support of Shift Coordinators, Assistant Nurse Managers, and NACs – both day and night. They also enjoy support from a 24-hour Lift Team, 24-hour Respiratory Team, Pharmacy (med mixing 24 hours a day), Social Workers and Chaplains.
The RN completes individualized patient assessments; develops a care plan based on assessment/history findings; delivers patient-centered care that is culturally appropriate; evaluates a patient's response to care and revises as needed. The RN is accountable to deliver care as well as to oversee and delegate to other personnel (clinical & non-clinical) in delivering/supporting the delivery of care.
