Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit
Nurses on this unit are highly trained to care for some of the most acutely ill patients at The University of Kansas Health System. Our patients recover from major cardiothoracic surgeries under the watchful eye of experienced, caring nurses and expert physicians. Patients in our unit have recently undergone cardiothoracic surgeries including coronary artery bypass, valve replacement, and heart transplants. Our nurses maintain competencies to manage advanced patient care therapies only offered in the Cardiothoracic Surgery ICU. These advanced therapies include continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), intrabdominal balloon pump (IABP), left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
