Significant M&A's during pandemic

The healthcare industry was shaken when Covid-19 pandemic happened. However, it is not only a time for advancement in emergency care, increase R&D on pharmaceuticals but it was also a significant time for different healthcare organization’s growth and partnerships. In the midst of being challenged on being able to provide high quality care, the need to provide accessible healthcare sites,  higher cost of operations and  regulation changes such as shifting to value-based care. Who would have thought that in the time of crisis, merger and acquisitions were also trending. The following deals were announced in 2020:

 

  • Novant Health-UNC Health-New Hanover Regional Medical Center Partnership

  • Harrington Healthcare Acquisition by Umass Memorial Health Care

  • Cone Health-Sentara Healthcare Merger

  • Virginia Mason Acquisition by CHI Franciscan/Commonspirit Health

  • Steward Health Care Doctors acquire a controlling stake of the Texas system

  • Advocare Aurora-Beaumont Health Merger

  • Atrium Health-Wake Forest Baptist Health Merger

  • Intermountain Health-Sanford Health Merger

 

Come 2021, investments continue to pour as direction points toward digital and virtual demands in the healthcare space. According to Epstein Becker & Green, a very solid 25% increase on merger and acquisitions from 2020, a total of around 3,000 transactions were expected by year-end. Although the technology aspect of the industry was apparent, medical supply makers also made it to the list. The following deals were announced in 2021:

 

  • PE firms Blackstone, Carlyle pick up Medline in biggest leveraged buyout in more than a decade

  • Microsoft grabs Nuance as latest healthcare bet

  • Cerner acquires Kantar Health

  • Siemens locks down Varian Medical Systems

  • Spectrum Health, Beaumont Health set sights on blockbuster merger

  • Nordic Capital, Insight Partners ink multibillion-dollar deal for Inovalon

  • Datavant notches data deal for Ciox Health

  • Humana expands home healthcare ambitions with Kindred deal

  • Alkuri Global Acquisition Corp. inks luxe deal for Babylon

  • 23andMe banks $600M in Branson-backed merger to fuel drug development

  • Ginger and Headspace shake hands on $3B mental health megamerger

  • Oracle acquires Cerner

  • Optum acquires Change Healthcare

  • AccessDx acquires 2bPrecise

  • EverCommerce acquires DrChrono

  • Vocera acquires PatientSafe

  • Edifecs acquires Health Fidelity

  • Baxter acquires Hillrom

 

Now, we are done with the first half of 2022 and the deals continue to happen in healthcare though it’s been few compared to previous years. 

 

  • ChristianaCare signed a letter of intent to acquire Crozer Health

  • Intermountain Healthcare merged with SCL Health

  • Piedmont Healthcare acquired University Health Care System

  • UnitedHealth Group purchased LHC Group

 

Truly, we continue to look out for these changes in the healthcare industry as we continue to push through this year. We are hoping that these movements will result to better care delivery, job opportunities and just uplift the public health overall.
